Separate listening from recording.
Ask what each file is for. A convenient listening copy helps you audition a beat. A production delivery is the material you will use to record and exchange with collaborators. Those jobs do not always call for the same export.
Write down your next step: write a demo, record a vocal, commission a mix or prepare a release. Then ask which files support that step. Price alone does not tell you what will be in the folder.
Check more than the extension.
Ask for the delivered format and export settings. A stereo WAV is not the same thing as separate instrument tracks. Changing a filename does not change the contents, and converting a listening copy does not create missing production tracks.
Ableton’s export documentation distinguishes PCM-based exports from MP3 exports and documents a possible timing offset in its MP3 exports. Confirm the engineer’s preferred handoff for material that must line up precisely.
Use a three-question file check.
Ask: ‘Is the instrumental tagged or untagged?’ ‘Is it one stereo file or separated tracks?’ ‘What format and settings will I receive?’ Save the answer with the title and applicable agreement.
When files arrive, open them, listen to the beginning and end, and check that their names match the order. Report a missing file with the order reference and exact filename.
Match the package to the real project.
